Financial Institutions have a regulatory requirement to know their customer (KYC) and know their customers’ customer (KYCC.) Not only is this a compliance issue, but it is also a sound business practice. The financial institution must understand the risk of the ACH transactions and the risk of the originators business. In order to understand and manage these risks, financial institutions can follow three steps – investigate the originator, model the transaction risk, and monitor the combination of the business risk and the transaction risk. This gives the institution the opportunity to pick good originators, understand the risk of any customer’s business and value the impact of transactional risk. In today’s economic and regulatory environment organizations must go beyond the basic steps in order to protect themselves from risk.
